The Importance of Being Adventurous
Adventure is out there! - Disney's "Up"
I got a perm today.
I have never done anything to my hair before- no dying, little to no straightening, I barely even blow dry it - so this is a big change. I was freaking out about it last night, so much so that I dreamt about all the ways it could go wrong, but now that's it's done, I kinda love it.
This experience reminded me that now is the time to be adventurous. I'm twenty years old. How long will I get to have the freedom to do basically whatever I want? How many more opportunities will I get to do something as ridiculous as getting a perm just so I look more Scottish for a play?
Sometimes adventure is little things- ordering something new at a restaurant, taking a different path to class, sitting somewhere new in the cafeteria.
Sometimes adventure is simple things- dancing to Kesha and remixing musical songs with your friends, giggling too loudly in the library late at night, driving half an hour for Chick-fil-A just because.
Sometimes adventure is things you never thought you would do- getting a perm, directing a play, going to Europe, applying to be an RA.
I've never been the most adventurous person. I get crazy ideas a lot, but they usually fall through. But the past few months, I've realized that sometimes you need to just dive in and let what happens, happen. Being open to opportunity can make more opportunities appear, even ones that you never expected.
I think I'm going to try to let adventure into my life more often. More adventure means more laughter, more joy, more fresh air in my lungs, more memories that will stick with me for life. Pull close the people that matter and do things that matter with them. The world is bursting with opportunity for something new at every moment. I want to grab more of those chances and let them shake up my life. Sometimes the thing you need is the thing you least expected, but you'll never find out if you don't take the leap (or get the perm). Adventure is out there, people - go and get it. I'll meet you there.
